Nixon Vanderhye Shareholder Kari Footland is a registered Patent Attorney with 16 years of experience prosecuting thousands of patents in a wide variety of technological areas for numerous Global 500 and Fortune 500 companies. Kari expanded the patent portfolio for several startup businesses to enable adequate funding. Her experience spans a wide range of technological fields, including telecommunications, robotics, transportation engineering, power management, aeronautical engineering, automobile components medical devices, image processing, signal processing, consumer appliances, and computer software and applications.
Prior to joining Nixon & Vanderhye, Kari worked for several DC-area intellectual property boutiques where she represented a variety of Global 500 and Fortune 500 companies. Her extensive knowledge of US practice allows her to effectively counsel clients and attorneys across Europe, Asia, and Australia with the most successful US patent strategies. Kari prides herself on efficiently prosecuting her clients’ applications with frequent use of examiner interviews to expedite prosecution. Kari also has experience drafting patent applications in the fields of telecommunications, surgical instruments, card payment systems, and robotic devices.

Kari graduated from the University of Virginia, with a concentration in electrical engineering. She received her J.D. from William & Mary School of Law, where she was a member of the William & Mary Law Review.
